Each spring, we eagerly await the Rose-breasted Grosbeak’s arrival in our yard. Waiting for his turn at the feeder, this male was perched in a nearby Quaking Aspen tree. The thick beak of theirs is designed for breaking open seeds.

Orchards surround the small rural town I grew up in. Every year, my family would make apple pies to freeze and preserve applesauce, apple butter, and apple jelly for the winter months. Apple crisps, dumplings, and other apple-themed desserts would be consumed. One weekend every fall, my family pressed gallons of cider for friends and family to enjoy. I love visiting the local orchards every fall, and this painting celebrates the rural roots and agriculture that sustain us all.
